The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors to undergo a seven-year residency training aimed at improving healthcare delivery within the FCT.
This development was announced by Mr. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the minister on Public Communications and Social Media, in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.
Olayinka clarified that these 34 doctors represent the first batch of 60 medical professionals selected for residency training in eight specialities at FCT Administration hospitals.
Of the 34, five will be assigned to the psychiatric department, four to internal medicine, and four to general surgery. The remaining positions will be filled by one doctor in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.
“This marks the first time that this initiative is being carried out outside the Health Management Board’s employees, thereby offering more opportunities to doctors and attracting more skilled professionals to healthcare delivery in the FCT,” Olayinka noted.
He further added that the recruitment of the remaining 26 doctors will be carried out by the FCTA Civil Service Commission. These will include one for the psychiatry department, four for internal medicine, eight for general surgery, five in anaesthesiology, and eight in paediatrics.
