The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), along with affiliated bodies, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja over delayed entitlements.
Speaking during the demonstration, TUC Secretary General, Mr. Nuhu Toro, appealed to the Federal Government to urgently release outstanding payments owed to union members since February.
The protesting unions include PENGASSAN, the Construction Workers Association, and the Kaduna Zonal Council of PENGASSAN, among others.
Toro expressed concern that the Minister of Finance was yet to address the files relating to their entitlements. He also lamented the worsening value of the naira and its impact on workers’ purchasing power.
Responding to the protest, Mr. Raymond Omachi, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties, said the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, had already approved the requests.
He assured the protesters that the issue would be resolved within 48 hours.
