“We Need a Raise”: Lawmakers’ Aides Press for Better Pay

The Forum of Legislative Aides in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has appealed to the Speaker, Dr Danladi Jatau, for a review and increment of their salaries to reflect the current economic realities.

The forum, led by its Chairman, Mr Sabo Christopher, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Speaker in his office in Lafia on Wednesday.

Christopher noted that the existing remuneration structure was no longer sustainable due to the rising cost of living and the demanding nature of their roles.

“We want to appeal for a salary increment to reflect the current economic realities and for the establishment of a Sovereign Fund for post-tenure support,” he said.

He also called for regular specialised workshops and training programmes for legislative aides to enhance their performance and efficiency in service delivery.

“We earnestly plead for a significant review and upward adjustment of our remuneration package,” he said, adding that the forum remains committed to supporting the leadership of the Assembly.

The forum passed a vote of confidence on Speaker Jatau, commending his “pragmatic and impactful leadership style.”

In his response, the Speaker expressed appreciation for the visit and acknowledged the role of legislative aides in ensuring effective legislative processes. He assured them of his support, promising to organise a capacity-building workshop for all aides.

“I am overwhelmed by your visit. I will continue to do my best for you and other staff,” he said.

However, on the issue of salary increment, Jatau urged the aides to be patient, noting that such a move may only be possible when the Assembly achieves full financial autonomy.

He also encouraged the aides to remain loyal to their principals and to be prayerful as they pursue their aspirations.
