Kebbi Governor Orders Refund of Unauthorised Deductions from Teachers’ Salaries
Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has ordered the immediate refund of unauthorised deductions from teachers’ September salaries, following complaints by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
The directive was issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi after an investigation by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The State NLC Chairman, Malam Murtala Usman, told journalists that the deductions had been made as professional registration fees for the Teachers Registration Council (TRC), but without the governor’s knowledge or approval.
According to him, the NLC intervened after receiving petitions from affected teachers.
“The NLC delegation met with the Ministries of Education and Finance, and later with Governor Idris. It was established that the deductions were not authorised by the governor, nor was he consulted beforehand. The governor therefore directed the immediate refund to the affected teachers,” Usman said.
He further disclosed that Governor Idris had warned the Ministry of Finance and other agencies against making salary deductions without due approval.
Usman commended the governor’s swift action, noting that it averted possible industrial unrest. He also urged teachers and other workers in the state to channel their grievances through their unions for prompt attention.
