The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Festus Osifo, on Thursday commended the Plateau State Governor, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang, for introducing worker-friendly policies and maintaining a peaceful relationship with labour unions in the state. Mr. Osifo delivered the message at the 1st Quadrennial Delegates’ Congress of the TUC in Plateau, held in Jos.
The congress, themed “Democracy, Peace and Workers’ Rights,” brought labour leaders together to reflect on the union’s achievements, assess prevailing challenges, and chart a more secure future for workers. Mr. Osifo, represented by the TUC Secretary-General, Mr. Nuhu Toro, said the gathering was particularly significant as Nigeria continues to confront major social, economic, and security pressures.
He explained that the congress was not merely to elect new leaders in Plateau State but to renew the union’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
“TUC will remain a beacon of hope, stability, and principled leadership, especially at a time when Nigeria continues to navigate complex socio-economic and security challenges,” he said.
“We commend the Governor of Plateau for his commitment and for sustaining a cordial relationship with labour unions in the state,” he added.
The Plateau State TUC Chairman, Mr. Kenneth Shammah, said the congress underlined the union’s continued advocacy for improved welfare for workers. He noted that the forum would further promote democratic values, peaceful coexistence, and social justice in the state.
Mr. Shammah pledged the union’s support for the Mutfwang administration but urged the government to address key challenges still affecting workers.
Declaring the congress open, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Workers’ Welfare and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Titus Alams, assured labour that the government would continue to prioritise the welfare of all workers in the state.
Mr. Alams, who thanked labour unions for their support, said the administration remained committed to providing a conducive working environment for the state’s workforce.
