The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has urged all levels of government and their negotiating councils to engage in sincere and productive discussions with trade unions to improve workers’ welfare across the country.
This appeal was made by Mr Benjamin Anthony, National President of the JNPSNC Trade Union Side, during the council’s election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Anthony emphasised the need for genuine government commitment in implementing policies that benefit public service workers. He highlighted JNPSNC’s role in advocating better working conditions and stressed that effective negotiations are key to ensuring fair treatment for workers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JNPSNC represents workers from various unions in both public and private organisations, including the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), among others. All these unions are affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Mr Adoga Aruwa, Vice Chairperson of the NLC FCT Chapter, also addressed the gathering, urging the newly elected executives to lead with integrity and dedication. He emphasised that leadership requires vision and commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
The newly elected Chairman of the JNPSNC FCT Chapter, Mr Jama Medan, pledged to prioritise industrial harmony and enhance working conditions for public servants in the FCT.
“We are committed to negotiating better working conditions and fostering strong industrial relations with the government. Unlike our predecessors, we will focus on creating an effective platform for advocating improved welfare for our members,” Medan said.
Other elected executives include Mr Shuaibu Onucheyo as Secretary, Mr Adoga Aruwa as Treasurer, and Captain Kabul as Assistant Secretary, alongside three Ex-Officio members. The election marks a new chapter for JNPSNC FCT, with hopes for stronger advocacy and improved welfare for public service workers.
