President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
He also ordered the enforcement of overdue pension increases and the implementation of a minimum pension guarantee to protect vulnerable retirees.
These directives were revealed in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, following a briefing by the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House in Abuja.
The President further instructed the PenCom boss to resolve longstanding issues surrounding the pension scheme for police officers, stressing that law enforcement personnel must be able to retire with dignity.
This follows recent nationwide protests by retired police officers over poor pension arrangements. The retirees demanded to be removed from the CPS, citing systemic shortcomings.
During the briefing, Oloworaran outlined steps being taken to safeguard pension fund value amid inflation and economic pressure. She also presented proposals to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to make foreign currency contributions to the pension scheme.
Additional reforms aimed at expanding coverage and enhancing retiree welfare across the country were also discussed.
President Tinubu expressed support for the reforms and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and comprehensive social protection.
