The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 952 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
However, the promotion of 179 officers was withheld—176 of them had already retired from service, while three were reported dead.
The Head of Press and Public Relations at the Commission, Mr Ikechukwu Ani, announced this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the decisions were reached during the inaugural plenary session of the Commission’s 6th Board.
Ani added that the approvals have been forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for immediate implementation.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, PSC Chairman, Mr Hashimu Argungu, urged them to uphold professionalism, patriotism, and strict adherence to Nigeria’s laws and police regulations.
He cautioned that the Commission would no longer tolerate unauthorised or diversionary conduct by serving officers, noting that established channels exist for addressing grievances.
Argungu also reaffirmed the PSC’s commitment to protecting officers’ career progression, stressing that no qualified officer would be denied promotion unfairly.
