President Tinubu Recruits 774 National Health Fellows

President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 774 National Health Fellows, a programme spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health to drive sustainable improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The President made the announcement on Thursday during the programme’s inauguration at the State House, commending both the boldness of the initiative and the rigour of its selection process.

“This programme is transformative and underscores my administration’s commitment to harnessing the immense potential of Nigeria’s greatest asset – its youth,” he said.

President Tinubu highlighted that with over 60% of Nigerians under the age of 30, the country boasts one of the most dynamic, energetic, and resourceful youth populations in the world. He noted that this demographic advantage presents unique opportunities to drive innovation, economic growth, and social change.

The President emphasised that the National Health Fellows initiative is just one of many platforms his administration has established to empower Nigerian youth, enabling them to excel and contribute meaningfully to national development.

He urged the fellows to make the most of the opportunity, seeing themselves as future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“This is more than just an employment opportunity; it is a testament to our commitment to building a nation where every Nigerian, regardless of social background, gender, or creed, has equal opportunities,” President Tinubu affirmed.

He stressed the programme’s vision to nurture a pipeline of health leaders who will drive meaningful and sustainable change within Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“Healthcare is a critical pillar of national development. No country can thrive if its people are unhealthy. An unsustainable healthcare system poses risks, while sustainable development hinges on a robust healthcare sector. You are the foundation of this vision, and I am proud to stand with you today,” he said.

Additional words of encouragement were offered by Mr Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Mr. Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth; and Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri.

The fellows, selected from all local government areas, were recruited based on recommendations from the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, who praised them as the best among 360,000 applicants, underscoring the merit-based approach of the process.
