Pension Heroes: Three Governors Win Praise for Prioritising Retirees

Governors Abba Yusuf (Kano), Umaru Bago (Niger), and Umar Namadi (Jigawa) were honoured on Tuesday with the ‘Pensioners-Friendly Governors’ award by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).

The awards were presented during the NUP’s 12th Quadrennial National Delegates’ Conference held in Kano, recognising the governors’ contributions to pensioner welfare in their respective states.

In his remarks, Governor Bago expressed gratitude for the recognition and announced plans to establish a pensioners’ farm to help retirees sustain their livelihoods. He said the initiative aligns with Niger State’s broader push to boost agricultural productivity.

Bago highlighted several efforts his administration is making in agricultural development, including the distribution of tractors and youth and women empowerment schemes. He also pledged ₦100 million to the union.

Governor Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Mr. Abdulsalam Gwarzo, reiterated his administration’s commitment to retirees, noting that over ₦16 billion has been paid in retirement benefits so far.

NUP President Mazi Godwin Abumisi said the awards were in recognition of the governors’ support in clearing pension and gratuity arrears, which have helped mitigate economic hardship for senior citizens.

Also speaking, Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero, represented by Mr Kabiru Minjibir, described the conference as timely and called for renewed focus on pensioners’ welfare.

Delegates from all 36 states and the FCT attended the conference.
