PenCom Records N820bn Pension Growth, Eyes Alternative Investments

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced that total assets under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) grew to N23.33 trillion as of March 31, 2025.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, PenCom’s Director of Surveillance, Mr. Saleem Abdulrahman, disclosed that the figure reflects an increase of N820 billion from N22.51 trillion recorded at the end of December 2024. He attributed the growth to fresh Retirement Savings Account (RSA) contributions and returns from investments, including equity gains and fixed-income interest.

Abdulrahman detailed the asset breakdown: RSA Funds I–VI accounted for N17.90 trillion (76.73%), Existing Schemes contributed N2.77 trillion (11.87%), and Closed Pension Funds made up N2.66 trillion (11.40%).

Most assets were invested in Federal Government Securities (62.09%), followed by domestic ordinary shares (11.02%) and money market instruments (8.91%). As of March 31, the pension industry recorded an annualised year-to-date portfolio performance of 19.29%.

To further diversify and enhance risk management, Abdulrahman revealed that PenCom, in partnership with Financial Sector Deepening Africa (FSD Africa), is organising a workshop on alternative asset investment for board-level investment committees of Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). This initiative aims to broaden the pension investment portfolio for improved returns.
