PenCom Reaffirms Commitment to Innovation and Inclusion in Pension System

By Ann Okoroafor

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has reiterated its commitment to revolutionising pension administration and enhancing service delivery across the sector.

Director-General of the Commission, Mrs. Omolola Oloworaran, made this known during the 2025 Customer Service Week celebration held in Abuja on Tuesday. She was represented by the Acting Commissioner, Inspectorate Department, Mr.Samuel Uwandu.

Oloworaran said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Mission Possible,” reflected the optimism and determination that had guided PenCom’s reforms and its goal of ensuring a secure and dignified retirement for every Nigerian worker — whether in the public, private, or informal sector.

She noted that the Commission’s sustained efforts had turned “the impossible into possible” by building a transparent and sustainable pension system anchored on efficiency, accountability, and integrity.

“Behind every regulation and reform is the story of individuals who have entrusted their future to the pension system. Our duty is to justify that trust through transparency and responsiveness,” she stated.

Oloworaran announced the launch of a new phase of pension administration, Pension 2.0, which focuses on innovation, inclusion, and integrity.

Under this phase, the Commission introduced key regulatory instruments, including guidelines for the management of Retirement Savings Accounts in foreign currency. The framework enables Nigerians working abroad or in foreign-owned companies to participate in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

She also highlighted the Personal Pension Plan (PPP), an initiative designed to extend pension coverage to self-employed and informal sector workers.

“The PPP embodies the spirit of Mission Possible. It breaks long-standing barriers to financial inclusion and ensures that every Nigerian, regardless of income or occupation, can build a secure retirement,” she said.

To further expand participation, PenCom developed a framework for accredited pension agents who will market and manage the PPP nationwide, reaching previously underserved communities.

Oloworaran added that the Commission had issued Revised Guidelines for Corporate Governance for Licensed Pension Fund Operators (LPFOs) to strengthen transparency and ethical conduct within the industry, thereby sustaining public trust.

Also speaking, Mr. Duruba Sesugh, Desk Officer at SERVICOM, said the Customer Service Week, celebrated annually during the first full week of October, recognised the contributions of employees and customers alike.

He said the 2025 theme underscored the importance of teamwork, employee motivation, and customer satisfaction.

“Employee experience is the new customer experience because customers care about how staff are treated,” Sesugh noted, adding that the event encourages improved morale and commitment to service excellence.

The celebration reaffirmed PenCom’s commitment to delivering efficient, inclusive, and technology-driven pension services to Nigerians.
