The Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, has pledged improved welfare for Nigerian pensioners, assuring closer collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP).
She made the commitment on Thursday, 25 September 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Union’s headquarters in Abuja — the first ever by a PenCom Director General.
Ms. Oloworaran led a PenCom delegation that included the Acting Commissioner, Inspectorate, Mr.Samuel Chigozie Uwandu, alongside other senior officials. She said the visit was aimed at strengthening ties with the Union and reaffirming PenCom’s commitment to ensuring retirees benefit fully from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
She commended the NUP for its consistent advocacy, adding that the Union’s representation on PenCom’sGoverning Board has been vital in advancing pension reforms.
Responding, NUP President, Comrade Godwin Ikechukwu Abumisi, described the visit as historic and praised Ms Oloworaran for breaking new ground as the first PenCom DG to formally engage the Union at its headquarters.
He lauded PenCom as a “star performer” in protecting pensioners’ interests and urged the DG to convey the Union’s appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for prioritising retirees’ welfare in government policy. Abumisi added that pensioners would “reciprocate President Tinubu’s goodwill at the appropriate time.”
