Oyo Nurses Join Nationwide Strike Over Welfare, Salary Delays

Nurses and midwives in Oyo State will join a nationwide seven-day warning strike from Wednesday, 30 July 2025, to 5 August, following directives from the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

The Oyo State Secretary of NANNM, Mr. Emmanuel Aina, announced the strike in a statement issued in Ibadan, stating that it follows an emergency National Executive Council meeting and subsequent national directive.

He urged full compliance across the state, noting that official notifications had been sent to relevant authorities regarding the union’s eight-point demand.

The strike aims to highlight poor welfare and working conditions. Aina described it as a “litmus test” for readiness to embark on more extensive industrial action if demands remain unmet.

Among the union’s key demands is the immediate implementation of the new minimum wage at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho. Another is the payment of uniform allowances to all nurses and midwives employed by the Oyo State Government, in accordance with existing public service rules.

The union is also demanding urgent recruitment of more nurses and midwives into the Hospital Management Board and LAUTECH to address critical staff shortages. In addition, the union is calling for a 25 per cent adjustment in the CONHESS salary structure for nurses and midwives in the state’s civil service, along with improved hazard allowances, particularly for those working at the local government level.

Aina emphasised that the welfare crisis in Oyo’s health sector demands urgent government intervention.
