Organised Labour in Ogun State has commenced an indefinite strike following the state government’s failure to address key labour concerns, including unpaid pension deductions and failure to implement the new minimum wage.
The strike action was announced in a statement released on Monday by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in the state, Mr. Demola Hameed-Benco. The declaration follows a statewide congress of public sector workers and labour unions.
Hameed-Benco cited non-compliance with the Ogun State Pension Reform Law of 2008—amended in 2013—which established the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). He said the scheme remains “largely dysfunctional”, putting workers’ future at risk.
He also criticised the state’s failure to fully implement the new minimum wage, describing it as a breach of statutory labour standards in Nigeria.
“All members are directed to withdraw their services until further notice,” the NLC statement read, warning that any worker who fails to comply “does so at their own risk.”
Hameed-Benco urged the Ogun State Government to open dialogue with labour leaders, warning that the strike will continue until concrete commitments are made.
“A united workforce cannot be defeated. Solidarity forever,” he concluded.
The strike is expected to significantly disrupt government operations across the state, affecting schools, hospitals, and other public services.
