Ogun Labour Shuns Pension Deal, Strike Continues Over N82bn Arrears

Organised labour in Ogun State has rejected Governor Dapo Abiodun’s proposed pension payment plan, vowing to continue its indefinite strike over unresolved labour issues and unpaid N82 billion in contributory pension deductions.

In a communiqué issued on Friday night and signed by representatives of 25 affiliate unions, the labour leaders said the strike would continue until all demands are fully addressed. The decision followed a seven-hour emergency meeting held in Abeokuta.

The workers’ grievances include issues with the Contributory Pension Scheme, the implementation of the new minimum wage, payment of eight years’ leave allowance arrears, consequential pension adjustments, and outstanding promotions for 2023 and 2024.

“The Council-in-Session is displeased with the government’s position, particularly on the Contributory Pension Scheme,” the communiqué read. “The declared trade dispute remains in effect.”

Earlier, Governor Abiodun had announced a 10-year pension settlement plan to address the backlog. The plan, communicated through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Lekan Adeniran, targets retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme starting from 2 July 2025.

The phased plan will span 2025–2030 and 2030–2035, covering the remainder of Abiodun’s tenure and that of his successors. The governor also revealed plans to discontinue the existing gratuity scheme from July 2025, reverting all consolidated salaries to the contributory system.

Despite this, labour representatives insisted the offer fell short and reaffirmed their commitment to industrial action until their concerns are fully resolved.
