The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Prof. John Okeniyi, says the hospital is placing a renewed focus on staff welfare and merit-based promotions to drive optimal performance.
Prof. Okeniyi made this known on Friday during a courtesy visit by the CMS Grammar School Old Students’ Association in Ile-Ife.
He said the management had tackled lingering issues such as industrial unrest caused by irregular employment practices. “The system has been sanitised. We’ve conducted two promotion examinations—nearly 400 staff were promoted in the first round, and 774 in the second this year,” he stated.
According to him, promotions are now strictly based on merit. “No staff needs a connection to be promoted. We also converted and promoted about 100 junior staff,” he added.
The CMD reiterated the hospital’s commitment to its core mandate of delivering world-class healthcare, particularly in specialised areas such as open-heart surgery and congenital heart disease treatment—services which help reduce medical tourism.
Okeniyi disclosed that the hospital is training its third cohort of cardiothoracic personnel and investing in manpower development for oncology and child development.
“We are gradually transitioning from analogue to digital systems. Electronic health records have been introduced, and full digitalisation of hospital administration is planned for this year,” he said.
He also revealed that the hospital would undergo 19 accreditation visits in 2025, building on its track record of excellence from 18 successful previous assessments.
In his remarks, Mr. Babajide Adeagbo, Chairman of the 1984 set of the CMS Grammar School Old Students’ Association, commended Prof. Okeniyi’s leadership and pledged the group’s continued support.
