The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has denied any involvement in the reported plans for a protest over the recently approved N32,000 pension increment and the N25,000 palliative payment for retirees.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Deputy National President of NUP, Chief Abdulahi Onu, said the proposed protest was neither authorised nor supported by the union’s national leadership. He described the protest as the action of splinter groups acting without consent and urged union members nationwide to disregard the call.

Onu said the union remains satisfied with the explanation provided by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) regarding the implementation of the pension increment and its efforts to clear outstanding arrears. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian pensioners.

He reiterated that no chapter or subgroup has the right to declare protests or industrial actions without the approval of the national leadership. According to Onu, such actions do not reflect the character of a responsible trade union and must be condemned.

He specifically mentioned the NIPOST Lagos Branch and other unauthorised factions as the sources of the protest call and clarified that their actions fall outside the union’s constitutionally recognised structures. He concluded by reaffirming the NUP’s commitment to orderly engagement with relevant authorities and its opposition to unauthorised protests that may misrepresent the union’s official stance.
