NULGE Uncovers Payroll Fraud, Absenteeism in Akamkpa Local Government

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Cross River State chapter, has raised alarm over rampant staff absenteeism and payroll abuse at the Akamkpa Local Government Council.

During a fact-finding visit on Tuesday, NULGE State President Mr. Leko Otabe accused several council workers of failing to report to work and receiving double salaries, blaming the issue on systemic administrative lapses.

“It is regrettable that many workers no longer report to duty, and some are earning dual salaries,” Otabe said, calling for immediate reform to restore accountability.

Otabe advocated granting council heads greater authority to recruit junior-level staff, saying this would strengthen oversight and improve service delivery.

He commended the state government for its efforts to clean up the system, particularly in streamlining payroll processes, restructuring the salary framework, and appointing permanent secretaries at the local level.

Akamkpa Council Chairman Mr. Felix Akposi welcomed the union’s visit, acknowledging widespread dereliction of duty among staff.

“I have repeatedly flagged the issue of absenteeism. Some workers disregard the time-book and exhibit an unprofessional attitude,” he stated. “We are committed to working with NULGE to rebuild a culture of accountability and innovation.”

The intervention comes amid growing public frustration with inefficiency in local governance, prompting calls for comprehensive reform at the grassroots level.
