NSITF Urges Private Sector Compliance with Compensation Law to Protect Workers

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has urged employers in the organised private sector to fully comply with the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA), 2010, to ensure adequate protection and compensation for Nigerian workers.

The Managing Director of the NSITF, Mr Oluwaseun Faleye, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja at the 4th edition of the Nigeria Employers’ Summit, organised by the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

Faleye explained that the ECA provides the legal framework for compensating employees who suffer work-related injuries, occupational illnesses, or death in the course of their duties. He stressed that workers’ welfare, safety, and adequate compensation must be prioritised above all other considerations.

“There is a need to provide workers with the required safety nets as mandated by law,” he said.

He noted that compliance with the law is not only a legal duty but also a moral imperative that supports the creation of a sustainable enterprise ecosystem.

“It is also important for you to ensure sustainability as an enterprise ecosystem while we enforce the law,” he added.

Faleye described workers as critical stakeholders in the workplace value chain and urged employers to prioritise their well-being.

“It is by adhering to laws such as the Employees’ Compensation Act—through which the Employees’ Compensation Scheme was established—that this can be achieved,” he said.

Addressing participants at the summit, the NSITF Managing Director acknowledged the shared commitment between the Fund and NECA to improve the welfare of workers, particularly those in the private sector.

He also commended NECA for its leadership and longstanding collaboration with NSITF, describing the partnership as vital to fostering compliance and reform within the labour ecosystem.
