NSITF Pays ₦90m Compensation to Seplat Staff, Expands Workplace Safety Campaign

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has paid ₦90 million in compensation to an employee of Seplat Energy Plc under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS). The payment, made in Abuja, is part of the Fund’s broader drive to support workers affected by workplace injuries and strengthen occupational safety nationwide.

Managing Director of the NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, disclosed this in an interview on Sunday, noting that the Fund also disbursed ₦30 million to a Nestlé Nigeria employee, ₦17 million to a MedPlus staff member, and ₦11 million to a Unity Bank worker.

“These are not just numbers; they represent real families whose lives have been restored. Processing and approving such claims is our daily responsibility, and we will continue to do so diligently,” Mr. Faleye said.

The Employees’ Compensation Scheme, established under the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010, mandates all employers in both public and private sectors to register with the NSITF and contribute to the Employee Compensation Fund. The Fund provides financial relief to workers who suffer work-related injuries, disabilities, diseases, or death.

Mr. Faleye revealed that claims payments had increased by about 56 per cent this year compared to 2024, attributing the rise to the Fund’s improved claims processing system. He said NSITF recently visited Nnewi, Anambra State, to showcase beneficiaries of the scheme and highlight its real-life impact.

On workplace safety, he explained that the Fund is intensifying preventive measures through partnerships with the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) under the Safe Workplace Intervention Programme (SWIP), which conducts safety audits, inspections, and awareness campaigns nationwide.

“We believe prevention should be at the heart of our mandate because the fewer workplace accidents occur, the fewer claims we will need to process,” he said.

Mr. Faleye added that the Fund also collaborates with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria to promote occupational health and safety across industries. He emphasised that these partnerships are essential to building a strong safety culture and ensuring Nigerian workers operate in safer environments.
