NSITF Empowers 57 Injured Workers with Tools and Start-Up Kits

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has provided start-up kits and work tools to 57 injured workers across the country to help them rebuild their lives after workplace accidents.

The presentation, held on Thursday at the Fund’s headquarters in Abuja, forms part of NSITF’s rehabilitation efforts under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS).

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, said the initiative underscored the Fund’s commitment to the welfare and reintegration of injured workers.

Faleye, represented by Mrs. Nkiru Ede-Ogunnaike, General Manager of Claims and Compensation, explained that the empowerment exercise was an essential component of the Fund’s mandate under the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) 2010.

He noted that vocational rehabilitation — involving reorientation, training, and empowerment — was designed to help employees who had suffered occupational injuries regain independence and resume productive economic activity.

Faleye reminded employers that the law required them to contribute one per cent of employees’ salaries to the ECS, enabling the NSITF to provide compensation, rehabilitation, and other forms of support in cases of work-related injuries, disabilities, diseases, or deaths.

He reaffirmed the Fund’s resolve to expand the empowerment initiative to reach more beneficiaries nationwide, adding that “no worker should be left behind after an injury.”

Among the recent beneficiaries were Mr. Philip Terwase, trained in furniture making; Mr. Daniel Imale, in auto diagnostics; and Mr. Nanbur Ezekiel, in POS operations.

Speaking on behalf of others, Terwase expressed gratitude to the NSITF for restoring their confidence and means of livelihood.
“This gesture has given us renewed hope. Instead of being a burden to society, we can now work and support ourselves again,” he said.
