The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has commended Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for approving a substantial salary increase for medical doctors, positioning Zamfara as the highest-paying state for doctors in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Gusau on Thursday, NMA Zamfara Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Hano, described the move as a historic milestone in the state’s health sector reforms.
“Governor Lawal’s administration has set a new benchmark by enhancing doctors’ salaries, implementing the ‘skipping’ policy, and introducing rural posting allowances,” Hano said. “With this, Zamfara now offers the highest pay to doctors in Northern Nigeria.”
Hano noted that the decision would boost morale, improve staff retention, and make Zamfara’s healthcare system more competitive.
He also praised broader reforms, including the renovation and expansion of the State Specialist Hospital in Gusau and upgrades across several general hospitals.
“The provision of advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment has greatly improved our capacity to manage complex medical cases,” he added.
Hano further applauded the administration’s recognition of primary healthcare as central to public health, citing the recent approval for recruitment of healthcare professionals across multiple cadres.
He expressed confidence that the reforms would strengthen Zamfara’s healthcare delivery and serve as a model for other Northern states.
