NLC Demands Speedier CNG Rollout to Reduce Worker Transport Costs

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to speed up the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure to address soaring transport costs affecting Nigerian workers.

In a communiqué issued on Sunday after its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Abeokuta, the NLC said the current implementation pace was inadequate to relieve the transportation burden on workers.

Signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the communiqué described the situation as “crippling,” warning that high transport costs were eroding real wages and worsening economic hardship.

While commending the government for donating CNG buses, the NLC said the infrastructure to support their usage was still largely unavailable.

The union warned lawmakers against any attempt to remove labour matters from the Exclusive Legislative List, directing its members to mobilise and picket the offices of any National Assembly member who supports such a move.

It also condemned forced union membership and called for the protection of workers’ rights to freedom of association.
