NiMet Unionists Suspend Strike Following Ministerial Intervention

Union members of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have suspended their strike action, which was called over demands for improved working conditions.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by Mr. Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

According to Moshood, the unions agreed to suspend the strike until 13 May to allow the federal government time to address their concerns.

“The development followed a crucial meeting convened by the Minister with leaders of the aggrieved unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP),” the statement read.

Comrade Aba Ocheme, NUATE’s National Secretary, confirmed the decision to suspend the industrial action, citing the Minister’s timely and sincere intervention.

Mr Alale Adedayo, ANAP National President, also noted that the unions opted to temporarily suspend the strike while efforts to resolve their grievances continued.

Moshood further stated that the Minister pledged to personally intervene by formally communicating with President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance to expedite the resolution of the financial issues raised by the unions.

Keyamo reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to industrial harmony in the aviation sector and commended the union leaders for demonstrating maturity, patriotism, and a willingness to engage in dialogue in the national interest.

The unions had embarked on the strike over unresolved issues, including poor working conditions, salary relativity with other aviation agencies, and the non-implementation of the 2019 consequential adjustment to the national minimum wage.
