Nigerian Nurses in Federal Institutions Issue 7-Day Strike Notice Over Welfare Demands

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Health Institutions sector (NANNM-FHI), has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government, citing unresolved issues around nurses’ welfare, allowances, and working conditions.

The notice, signed by the National Secretary, Nurse Enya Osinachi, and released by the President, Nurse Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan, followed an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on 10 July in Abuja.

NANNM-FHI stated that the move aims to compel the government to initiate meaningful dialogue on critical issues affecting nurses in federal medical institutions across the country.

The union said the latest strike notice became necessary after the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on 14 July, which elicited no concrete response from either the Federal Government or the Federal Ministry of Health.

“The strike will begin at midnight on Tuesday, 29 July, and will involve total service withdrawal across all federal health institutions,” the statement declared.

The association has directed its members nationwide to fully comply with the strike action and show solidarity.

Reaffirming the vital contribution of nurses—who account for an estimated 60 to 70 per cent of hospital services—the association insisted that they deserve improved welfare, fair remuneration, and institutional recognition for their indispensable role in healthcare delivery.

NANNM-FHI also rejected a circular dated 27 June from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC), calling for its immediate withdrawal. The group demanded adjustments to key allowances, including: shift duty allowance, call duty allowance and retention allowance

The union urged the Federal Government to respond constructively, warning that the failure to support Nigeria’s nursing workforce will undermine efforts to achieve quality healthcare and sustainable public health outcomes across the country.
