The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has disclosed that 5,000 young people in Edo State are currently undergoing training in various skill acquisition programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and promoting self-reliance.
The Director-General of the NDE, Mr. Silas Agara, announced this on Friday during an inspection visit to a skill acquisition centre under construction in Ogbona, Etsako Central Local Government Area of the state. He explained that the facility, once completed, would serve as a hub for vocational training and youth empowerment.
“Currently, we are training 5,000 youths in Edo under our skill acquisition programme,” Agara said. “We have 128 skills centres and 150 farm settlements across the country. Our goal is to impart knowledge to young people and women, enabling them to become self-employed.”
Speaking on the progress of work at the Ogbona centre, the DG stated that the facility was designed to equip participants with vocational and entrepreneurial skills. “As you can see, there is visible progress across major structures. The skill centre has over 12 different skill sets. We are here to provide technical support to ensure the project’s success,” he added.
Agara further explained that when completed, the centre would train young Nigerians in trades such as tailoring, carpentry and other vocational areas. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering the youth through sustained investment in vocational education and skill development initiatives.
