The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has entered into negotiations with the management of Melsmore Marine Nigeria Ltd. to resolve longstanding concerns relating to workers’ welfare.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos by the union’s Head of Media, Mr John Kennedy Ikemefuna, on behalf of the President-General of MWUN, Mr Francis Bunu.
According to Bunu, the union has opened a dialogue with Melsmore Marine, and discussions are ongoing to ensure the adoption of improved welfare measures for its members.
It will be recalled that MWUN had previously issued a 21-day ultimatum to Melsmore Marine over its failure to provide a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and records of pension fund remittances for its employees, as demanded by the union.
“The leadership of the union is already engaged in positive discussions with Melsmore’s management to find a lasting solution to the issues that prompted the 21-day ultimatum,” Bunu said.
“This dialogue is aimed at fostering mutual understanding and securing the well-being of our members, who are bonafide employees of Melsmore Marine Nigeria Ltd.”
He noted that a series of meetings have been held between both parties, although discussions remain in the early stages. The union has since suspended the ultimatum as a gesture of goodwill during the negotiation process.
