The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has declared it will not support any company in the maritime sector that fails to prioritise employee welfare.
Francis Bunu, President-General of the union, made this statement during a courtesy visit by Tim Maguire, Managing Director of GMT, to the union’s secretariat in Lagos.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the union’s spokesperson, JohnKennedy Ikemefuna, Bunu stressed that the union’s relationship with any firm would be determined by how it treats its workers.
“One of the main reasons the union will not maintain cordial relations with any company in the sector is its failure to uphold staff welfare,” Bunu said.
He added that MWUN would only engage meaningfully with companies that demonstrate fairness and respect in their dealings with employees.
The union leader noted that MWUN had invested significantly in training its members to deliver quality service and would not hesitate to discipline workers who fail to meet expected standards.
Bunu commended Maguire for the visit and reaffirmed that the long-standing cordial relationship between GMT and the union would be sustained, especially if the company continues to prioritise staff welfare.
He emphasised that leadership is a continuum and assured GMT of the union’s continued support, provided its employee-focused policies remain intact.
In his remarks, Maguire congratulated Bunu on his election and reiterated GMT’s commitment to supporting his leadership. He described Bunu as a refined labour leader and maritime professional whose contributions to the sector are invaluable.
Maguire pledged that GMT would continue to maintain its positive relationship with the union under Bunu’s tenure.
