LAUTECH Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike Over Non-Implementation of New Salary Structure

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), LAUTECH Teaching Hospital branch, has embarked on an indefinite strike following the university’s continued failure to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairman, Dr Ruth Ilori, and Secretary, Dr Abraham Akinbola, and issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the association stated that the decision was taken after the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the university management. According to MDCAN, the deadline lapsed without any meaningful response.

The consultants had earlier demanded the immediate implementation of CONMESS and full payment of arrears dating back to January 2025. The union expressed frustration that, despite suspending a previous strike based on verbal assurances from the university’s Vice-Chancellor, no tangible steps had been taken to resolve the matter.

MDCAN also noted that LAUTECH remains the only university in the South-West yet to adopt the CONMESS structure. They described this as a serious setback for staff welfare and the quality of medical education at the institution.

Describing the strike as a painful but necessary action, the consultants said the disruption of academic and clinical services was entirely due to the university’s failure to honour its commitments. All academic activities provided by MDCAN members have now been suspended indefinitely.

While acknowledging the likely impact on students and patients, the association insisted that the continued neglect of their members’ welfare is unsustainable under current conditions
