Lagos Disburses ₦978.6m Insurance Benefits to Families of Deceased Civil Servants

The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦978.62 million in insurance benefits to 510 families of deceased public servants, reaffirming its commitment to workers’ welfare, even after their passing.

The presentation ceremony, held on Friday in collaboration with LASACO Assurance Plc, was presided over by the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi. He conveyed the government’s condolences and reiterated its dedication to supporting the families of civil servants who died in active service.

Oluyomi acknowledged that some beneficiaries had experienced delays, appealing for understanding in light of the emotional and financial strain bereaved families endure.

“All Lagos State employees are assured that the government stands by them—both in life and in death,” he said. “Today, over 510 beneficiaries are receiving close to one billion naira in this first phase of the 2025 disbursement.”

He advised recipients to use the funds judiciously and disclosed that another round of payments would be made within three months.

Oluyomi also commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising public servants’ welfare, noting that more than ₦3 billion had already been paid in insurance premiums this year for personnel and asset coverage.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Mahmud Alao, urged beneficiaries to avoid extravagant spending to ensure the funds serve their intended purpose.

Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Mr. Femi Saheed, applauded the executive’s diligence and highlighted the Assembly’s oversight role in ensuring accountability. He encouraged civil servants to obtain personal insurance policies to complement the state’s coverage.

Managing Director of LASACO Assurance Plc, Mr Rasaq Abiodun, praised the state government’s consistency in premium payments and advised recipients to invest wisely.

Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Mr. Segun Balogun, thanked the state for its unwavering support and called for financial discipline among beneficiaries.

Speaking on behalf of recipients, Mrs. Constance Ajayi expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, noting the economic hardships many families face after losing their breadwinners.

The event concluded with a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased public servants.
