Kogi Doctors Decry Poor Pay, Stalled Promotions Amid Health Sector Crisis

Doctors in Kogi State have raised concerns over poor remuneration and lack of career progression, warning that the state’s health system may deteriorate further unless urgent steps are taken to improve doctor welfare in Nigeria.

The alarm was sounded on Thursday in Lokoja through a joint statement issued by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and the National Association of General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP).

Signed by Dr. Olukoya Taiwo, Chairman of NAGGMDP; Dr. David Omeiza, President of ARD at Kogi State Specialist Hospital; and Dr. Aikoye Daniel, President of ARD at Prince Abubakar Audu University Teaching Hospital, the statement acknowledged Governor Ahmed Ododo’s efforts in improving health infrastructure and rolling out a health insurance scheme.

However, the doctors noted that while these developments are commendable, they mean little if the welfare of medical professionals is not addressed. According to the statement, a stronger health system can only be achieved if doctors are adequately supported and incentivised.

The associations said doctors in the state are facing serious challenges, including the partial implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), non-payment of financial entitlements attached to past promotions, and the absence of annual salary increments.

They recalled that although the state government approved full implementation of the 2024 CONMESS in November 2024, it has yet to be properly executed. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of cash-backing for previous promotions, which has kept many doctors stuck on the same salary grade for more than eight years.

As a result, the number of practising doctors in the state continues to fall, with many leaving due to unresolved welfare issues and inadequate salaries.

The doctors urged Governor Ododo to act swiftly and address their concerns. They expressed confidence that the governor, known for his pro-welfare stance, would respond positively to their appeal.

While commending the state’s health insurance scheme for increasing patient attendance at government hospitals, the associations warned that without resolving these core welfare issues, such programmes would ultimately fall short of their goals.

They called on the governor to conduct a comprehensive review of the issues raised and take prompt action to ensure sustainable improvements in the state’s healthcare system.
