Katsina State Governor, Mr. Dikko Radda, has approved the release of ₦21.7 billion to settle outstanding retirement benefits and death gratuities for workers in the state and local government services.
The approval was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu-Zango, on behalf of the Head of the Civil Service, Alhaji Falalu Bawale.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee tasked with managing the disbursement of the funds, Alhaji Bawale said the payment would cover beneficiaries in the state civil service, local government service, and Local Education Authorities (LEAs).
“The funds are intended to clear all outstanding retirement and death benefits from September 2023 to October 2025,” he said.
Alhaji Bawale added that the approval was aimed at eliminating existing backlogs and improving the welfare of retired workers, as well as the families of deceased employees. He explained that ₦7.7 billion would be paid as a one-off settlement in December 2025 to former state civil servants, while more than ₦14 billion would be disbursed in tranches to former local government and LEA staff between December 2025 and March 2026.
Dr. Salisu-Zango noted that the approval followed an earlier decision by Governor Radda to release more than ₦23 billion to clear retirement and death benefit backlogs covering the period from January 2019 to August 2023. He said this demonstrated the state government’s sustained commitment to workers’welfare.
