Golden Exit: Nigeria Promises Lifetime Pay for Top-Ranking Officers

The Federal Government has approved a new welfare policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the ranks of Deputy Controller, Comptroller or Commandant-General.

The policy was announced by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat in Abuja. It was disclosed in a statement by the Federal Fire Service, signed by DCF P.O. Abraham, NPRO/Head of Corporate Services.

According to the minister, the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening institutional performance and improving the welfare of officers.

“Any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller or Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Tinubu,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo also disclosed that the Ministry had cleared a long-standing backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers elevated within two years. He emphasised that promotions going forward would be based strictly on capacity and performance rather than seniority alone.

The minister further unveiled plans for a world-class Fire Academy designed to meet global standards, saying the institution would compete with leading training schools such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

He also highlighted the importance of workplace wellness, assuring that mental health would remain a priority in the Ministry’s welfare framework.
