FG Leads Anti-Child Labour Rally in Lagos, Urges Public Reporting

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment (FMLE) has intensified efforts to combat child labour in Nigeria by leading a large-scale sensitisation rally in Lagos. The awareness march, held recently, aimed to engage local communities on the dangers and illegality of child exploitation.

The rally commenced at the FMLE Lagos State Headquarters in Ikoyi and moved through the streets of Isale-Eko, attracting civil society groups, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and multiple government agencies. Participants held banners and placards with messages such as “End Child Labour Now,” drawing attention from passers-by and local businesses.

Omofonwan Eunice Joy, FMLE’s Desk Officer for Child Labour, explained that the rally was not merely symbolic but aimed to spark active community participation.

“Child labour robs children of their childhood, education, and future. This is not just a social issue—it’s a crime with legal consequences,” she said.

Mrs. Obiageli Udokoro, Assistant Director of Labour, reiterated that both the Labour Act and the Child Rights Act of Nigeria strictly prohibit the employment of children in hazardous, exploitative, or inappropriate conditions.

“The laws are clear. Offenders will face prosecution. We are scaling up enforcement in collaboration with other agencies,” she stated.

Violations of these laws can result in severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment. FMLE officials emphasised that protecting children from economic exploitation is a national priority tied to Nigeria’s commitment to international labour standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To facilitate public involvement, the Ministry has launched dedicated reporting hotlines for citizens to confidentially report cases of child labour. Officials assured that whistleblowers would be protected and that every report would be treated with urgency and confidentiality.

This initiative is part of broader national efforts to eradicate child labour in Nigeria and raise awareness about its damaging long-term impact on children and society.
