The Federal Government has commenced training for youths in Lagos under the Skill-to-Wealth (S2W) programme, an initiative aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical skills in agriculture, renewable energy, and the automobile industry.
The training, which spans three weeks, was flagged off on Thursday by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
Organised under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the programme targets all six geopolitical zones and seeks to reduce youth unemployment by offering hands-on training in high-impact sectors.
“We are here not just to begin a training programme, but to ignite a movement powered by young Nigerians eager to grow and realise their potential,” said Yilwatda. “This is more than a policy—it’s progress in action.”
He encouraged the participants to embrace the opportunity, saying, “The skills you acquire here can change your trajectory. We’re aiming not just for poverty alleviation, but for genuine poverty reduction.”
The Minister stressed the growing demand for skills in renewable energy, adding that many traditional mechanics risk becoming obsolete without retraining.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata, described the programme as a “hand up, not a handout” and urged participants to take ownership of their futures.
Mr. David Daser, President/CEO of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), commended the ministry for partnering with DBI and encouraged the youth to make the most of the rare opportunity.
Also speaking, Lagos State Chairman of the National Youth Council, Mr. Olalekan Adigun, praised the government’s commitment to empowering youths and urged beneficiaries to maximise the programme’s potential.
One of the trainees, Mr. Ridwan Atolagbe, expressed gratitude for the initiative, describing it as a life-changing opportunity for Nigerian youths.
