FG Begins Payment of N175,000 Wage Arrears, Abuja Workers Unhappy with Instalments

Federal civil servants in Abuja have expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s decision to stagger the payment of the N175,000 wage award arrears, rather than disbursing the full amount at once.

The arrears—accrued from the N35,000 wage award over five months—began to be paid this week, with the government releasing only one month’s tranche. Many workers are unhappy with the piecemeal approach.

Mr. John Lewis, a senior staff member at the Ministry of Information, criticised the handling of the payment. “The Federal Government assured us they would pay, but I’m surprised they only paid one month’s worth, instead of settling the five-month backlog,” he said.

He accused the authorities of neglecting civil servants’ welfare. “It appears those in charge do not have our best interests at heart. It’s reminiscent of the uncertainty surrounding the minimum wage. Nobody knows the current status, aside from the N40,000 being paid across the board.”

Lewis added that the payment should have been made in full, as the money was long overdue. “It feels like they’re doing us a favour, when in fact, we earned it,” he said.

Chief Librarian Mr. Unekwu-ojo Idachaba echoed the sentiment. “The government owes us N175,000 for five months. Instead of paying it in full, they’re releasing it in instalments. It’s disheartening,” he said.

He argued that a single payment would have had a more meaningful impact. “N35,000 alone doesn’t go far. A lump sum would have made a real difference. The government must improve its financial planning and be transparent with workers.”

However, not all civil servants were displeased. Mrs. Joy Okezia welcomed the partial payment, though she admitted it was unexpected. “I’m happy the money finally came, even if it’s just for one month. I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said.

Okezia said she had feared the money would only be paid after a labour strike. “I thought a strike would be necessary to compel payment. I urge the government to prioritise workers’ issues and fulfil obligations without delay.”

Another civil servant, Malam Abubakar Bakari, acknowledged the progress but urged the Federal Government to treat workers’ welfare as a priority. “It’s a positive step, but consistent and fair treatment of civil servants is essential. Workers are the engine of national development,” he said.

Earlier this week, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation announced that the N175,000 in wage arrears would be paid in five monthly tranches of N35,000. The first payment has now been made.
