Federal Workers Participate in AHFE Health Walk to Promote Fitness in Enugu

By Mariam Aligbeh

Federal civil servants in Enugu took to the streets on Wednesday as the Association of Heads of Federal Establishments (AHFE), Enugu Chapter, organised a health walk to promote physical fitness and well-being among workers.

The event, which attracted participants from various federal agencies, was aimed at encouraging regular physical activity to enhance health, vitality, and workplace productivity.

Speaking during the exercise, AHFE Chairman, Mr Emeka Nwokoro, said the initiative was introduced to remind civil servants of the importance of physical activity in maintaining good health. He noted that many workers lead sedentary lives, moving only between home and the office, which poses long-term risks to their physical and mental well-being.

“Through exercise, we become more energetic and mentally alert. That is the essence of this health walk,” Nwokoro said.

He added that although the walk currently takes place quarterly, some members have suggested making it a monthly event due to its visible benefits. He urged workers who had yet to participate to join future walks, stressing that fitness enhances concentration and efficiency at work.

Nwokoro also expressed appreciation to Lofish Travel and Tour Ltd. for partnering with AHFE to ensure the programme’s success. He further thanked the Federal Fire Service, the Nigerian Correctional Service, and the Police Command for their support in providing security during the exercise.

A representative of Lofish Travel and Tour Ltd., Ms Chioma Chinwetalu, said their collaboration with AHFE reflected the company’s commitment to promoting wellness among Nigerians. She encouraged workers to make exercise a regular habit, noting that “consistent physical activity improves overall health and performance at work.”

Similarly, Mrs Calista Mmeku, Commander of Narcotics at the NDLEA Enugu Command, lauded the initiative, saying it helped her feel more relaxed and rejuvenated.
“I noticed remarkable changes in my body even after walking a short distance. I feel much lighter and more at ease,” she said.
