Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called off their strike after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, approved their outstanding demands, which centred on unpaid arrears.
Wike announced the approval on Friday during the inauguration of the Northern Parkway construction project on Shehu Yar’Adua Way in Abuja. He confirmed he had signed off on all pending requests from the doctors.
“All the files containing the requests on my table have been duly signed. I must commend the resident doctors for calling off the strike. The administration is happy with their understanding,” the minister said.
He directed the FCT’s acting Head of Service, working with his Senior Special Adviser on Administration, Samuel Atang, to implement the approvals immediately.
The doctors had suspended their industrial action on 15 September following months of stalled negotiations with the FCT Administration (FCTA). Their demands included the payment of salary arrears – ranging from one to six months – for members employed since 2023, the immediate recruitment of new staff, and the settlement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund. They also sought arrears from the 25/35 per cent upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and clear timelines for completing skipping and conversion processes.
Speaking on the road project, Wike said it would generate employment, ease traffic congestion, and stimulate economic activities in the city.
