Enugu Launches Human Development Council to Drive Social Investment

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on Friday inaugurated the Enugu State Human Development Council at the Government House, reiterating that human capital remains the most valuable asset of any nation and a top priority of his administration.

The council, chaired by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, comprises members of the State Executive Council, heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), as well as representatives from the state legislature, local governments, traditional institutions, religious bodies, and civil society organisations.

Governor Mbah explained that the council aligns with his administration’s focus on human development and social investment.

He urged members to approach their responsibilities with seriousness and deliver measurable results.

“One of our top goals is to eradicate poverty and reduce the poverty headcount to zero,” Mbah stated, adding that his government places greater value on human capital than on natural resources.

“Our last two budgets allocated over 50 per cent of total expenditure to social services,” he noted.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Ossai assured the governor of the council’s commitment to achieving its objectives. He stressed that all government initiatives — from infrastructure to education — are designed to improve lives.

“All our projects are people-centred. The council will help monitor, track, and evaluate our progress,” Ossai said.
