EEDC Workers Protest in Awka Over Poor Pay and Arrest of Colleagues

Electricity workers under subcontractor FIRSTPOWER, engaged by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), staged a protest in Awka, Anambra State, on Thursday over poor wages, alleged harassment, and the detention of four staff members.

Led by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), the protesters blocked the main entrance to the EEDC office, halting operations. The detained staff, including a mother of three, were arrested on 31 July by police without following the company’s internal disciplinary procedures.

NUEE said more than 80 per cent of workers earn below ₦60,000 monthly, with some salaries unchanged since 2014. It accused the company of fostering an oppressive work environment and using security agencies to intimidate employees.

The union warned of further action if the arrested workers are not released and systemic labour issues addressed. It recalled a similar dispute in August 2024, which ended with EEDC committing to respect labour standards.
