The National Industrial Court in Lagos has ordered News Central Limited to pay a former employee, Rebecca, the sum of US$22,745.69 as outstanding entitlements following the termination of her employment.
Justice Isaac Essien, who presided over the case, ruled that the amount must be paid immediately upon service of the judgment order. The court also awarded an additional N200,000 as costs.
Court records show that Rebecca filed a claim seeking payment of her unpaid entitlements, along with interest. News Central did not respond or file a defence.
Her lawyer, U.E. Onwuka Esq., applied for a summary judgment, arguing that the company had no valid defence and had acknowledged its debt but failed to pay despite repeated demands.
Delivering judgment, Justice Essien said that under court rules, summary judgment is appropriate where no defence exists. The court upheld the claim and awarded the full amount to Rebecca.
