The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), the statutory body regulating Human Resource Management in the country, formally inducted 1,097 new members at its 64th Induction Ceremony held on Thursday in Lagos.
CIPM President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Ahmed Ladan Gobir, FCIPM, fnli, emphasised that membership of the Institute is not only a professional credential but also a legal obligation for anyone practising HR in Nigeria.
“In accordance with the provisions of our enabling Act, CAP I15, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, any individual practising Human Resource Management without CIPM certification is in breach of the law,” Gobir stated. “This applies across the public and private sectors, including non-governmental organisations.”
New members were inducted through three qualifying routes: 21 via the Executive Route, 212 through the HR Practitioners Route, and 864 as Associate Members via the Professional Examination Route.
Describing the event as more than a formality, Gobir said it marks the beginning of a professional journey. “You’ve joined more than a professional body — you are now architects of workplace excellence, custodians of organisational culture, and enablers of business transformation,” he said.
He also highlighted the international relevance of CIPM certification, citing existing mutual recognition agreements with the UK’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (CPHR) in Canada. “Our certificates serve as global passports,” Gobir added, urging inductees to explore international opportunities.
Themed “Human Resource Management: Past, Present and Future,” the event explored the evolution of HR in Nigeria and challenged inductees to shape the future of work with professionalism and purpose. Guest speaker Mr Leslie George, MCIPM, was commended for his insights and experience.
In his closing remarks, Gobir charged the new members to wear the CIPM badge with pride. “HR is not just about managing people; it’s about unlocking their potential,” he said. “You are now part of a legacy that is transforming workplaces, institutions, and the nation.”
The induction reinforced CIPM’s ongoing commitment to professionalism, legal compliance, and high standards in HR practice across Nigeria.
