The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Plc has recruited over 70 new employees to replace exiting staff and maintain a balanced workforce across its regions, in a move that underscores its commitment to enhancing employee welfare and service delivery.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Thursday, the Acting Managing Director, Mr. Jonathan Lawani, revealed that the company would formally sign its long-awaited Condition of Service document on 31 July. According to Lawani, the document establishes clear and equitable terms of employment, including growth opportunities and comprehensive staff benefits. It is intended to promote a performance-driven and employee-centred organisational culture.
He explained that the agreement, which followed extensive consultations with internal stakeholders, had been fully endorsed by the company’s board of directors and marked a historic milestone in employee-focused policy reform. Lawani described the policy as a bold testament to BEDC’s commitment to delivering on promises and transforming its internal culture through staff-centred, performance-based reforms.
Over the past three months, Lawani said BEDC has recorded measurable progress in staff engagement and operational efficiency. He dismissed circulating misinformation about the company’s internal changes, stressing that the facts speak for themselves. He noted that BEDC had moved away from outdated practices and had demonstrated strong commitment to motivating employees, improving service delivery, and building a skilled, efficient, and productive workforce.
As part of its employee development drive, the company selected top-performing linesmen and Distribution Substation Operators (DSSOs) for an all-expense-paid technical and safety training programme in Lagos and Abuja. Lawani said these efforts are aimed at equipping frontline personnel with the tools, expertise, and confidence needed to deliver quality services under safe working conditions.
He also noted that operational support had significantly improved across BEDC’s franchise areas, with renewed funding leading to the deployment of vehicles, upgraded tools, and logistical support to boost field operations. Additionally, BEDC has overhauled its material supply processes through the introduction of proactive warehousing systems that enable quicker procurement, reduce delays, and improve customer service turnaround times.
Reaffirming the company’s focus on staff welfare and professional development, Lawani stated that these reforms were no longer theoretical goals but are being experienced across every level of BEDC’s operations. He called on the public to disregard misinformation and attempts to derail the company’s progress, emphasising that the leadership remains focused, transparent, and appreciative of the resilience and achievements of its employees.
According to him, BEDC will continue to enhance working conditions, introduce more staff incentives, and foster a safe, inclusive workplace for all.
