The Bayelsa State Government has approved the recruitment of additional medical doctors and laboratory scientists as part of its ongoing civil service employment exercise.
This was disclosed by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, during a courtesy visit by the Bayelsa branch of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) to his office in Yenagoa on Wednesday.
Ewhrudjakpo stated that the recruitment aims to address manpower shortages in critical sectors, particularly healthcare, to enhance service delivery across the state.
“No profession within the health sector is superior to another,” he emphasised. “We need collaboration among all health professionals to achieve the best outcomes.”
He assured the visiting delegation that certified and competent medical laboratory scientists, as well as other healthcare professionals, would be recruited based on a needs assessment carried out by the state government.
The deputy governor also expressed the government’s willingness to partner with AMLSN and other key stakeholders to make healthcare more affordable and accessible to Bayelsans.
“We are making progress in the health sector, but we recognise that much more still needs to be done,” he said. “Recruitment slots have already been approved for doctors and lab scientists. We want highly qualified personnel who can deliver quality services.”
“Every health worker contributes to promoting public health. No one profession is more important than the others. We are open to collaboration with your association to improve healthcare access across the state,” Ewhrudjakpo said.
Earlier, the State Chairperson of AMLSN, Mrs. Eunice Ayamaer-Lelei, appealed to the government to hire more qualified laboratory scientists and to invest in modern laboratory equipment.
She stressed the critical role laboratory scientists play in Nigeria’s healthcare system and called for the implementation of approved call duty allowances for members of the association.
