Nasarawa Governor Unveils New Public Service Rule, Approves End-of-Year Bonuses

By Mariam Aligbeh

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has unveiled a new public service rule to guide civil servants in the discharge of their duties and announced an end-of-year bonus for state workers.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday during the Nasarawa State Civil Service Week held in Lafia.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sule said the state government had considered introducing a 13th-month salary as a bonus but decided against it because some local government areas (LGAs) lacked the financial capacity to pay the full amount.

“We will ask the LGAs to go and do their due process, find out how much they saved, and tell me what percentage they can pay. The moment they tell me, that is exactly what the state can get. I don’t want to say I’m paying 13 months and LGAs will say they can only pay 30 to 40 per cent,” he said.

The governor described the Civil Service Week as an opportunity to assess the workforce as “a living institution made up of people committed to excellence, integrity, and innovation.”

He said the theme of the week, ‘Repositioning the Civil Service for a Digital Aid Production Future’, aligns with the state’s efforts to embrace digital governance.

“I should mention that in this age of global digital transformation, no government can afford to operate without data tools, methods, and mindset. The civil service must evolve into a smart, technology-driven, and data-informed organisation capable of responding swiftly and effectively to the needs of the good people of Nasarawa State,” Mr. Sule said.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to digitalise human resource systems, payroll management, and record-keeping, with the aim of creating a paperless, efficient, and transparent public administration.

The governor also commended the All ProgressivesCongress (APC)-led Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu for implementing economic reforms that, he said, have enabled the state to execute projects without borrowing.

During the event, Mr. Sule rewarded exemplary civil servants for punctuality and dedication. Among the awardees, Comfort David received 1 million, while Amina Idris and Chinasa Azubini received 500,000 each.

Earlier, the Head of the Nasarawa State Civil Service, Ms. Abigail Waya, praised the governor for his support for workers. She said the Civil Service Week featured a series of activities that would be institutionalised.

She urged civil servants to be more dedicated and punctual and encouraged them to obtain the new public service rule to guide their work.
