Federal Pensioners Plan Nationwide Naked Protest Over Unpaid Arrears

By Mariam Aligbeh

The Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria has announced plans to hold a nationwide naked protest on 8 December across Abuja, Lagos, and all states to demand the payment of outstanding pension increment arrears and palliative allowances. The group said the move became necessary after the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General failed to respond to their complaints.

The National Chairman of the coalition, Mr. Mukaila Ogunbote, who also chairs the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NIPOST Chapter), disclosed the planned action in a statement on Friday in Lagos. He said pensioners could no longer remain silent over their unpaid 32,000 pension increment arrears and the 25,000 palliative allowance approved in 2023.

Mr. Ogunbote said the protest would proceed unless the Federal Government settles the arrears before the scheduled date. “The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant-General’s Office are not taking us seriously; so, all pensioners must come out en masse to fight the injustice,” he said.

He explained that demonstrations would be held at the offices of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) and in front of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) stations in all states.

The chairman urged all chairmen and secretaries of organisations under the coalition to mobilise their members fully for the demonstration.

“We must show the wound that our clothes are covering,” he said, adding that the action would continue daily until pensioners receive alerts for the 32,000 increment and the 25,000 allowance for six months.

“All pensioners must come out and fight for their rights. Those who cannot go back home should come with mats,” Mr. Ogunbote added.
