Lecturers under the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Gidanwaya chapter, Kaduna State, have commended Governor Uba Sani for approving the implementation of the enhanced 70 per cent CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure. The approval followed the union’s three-week strike in September, which was aimed at securing improved remuneration and addressing other welfare-related concerns.
The union conveyed its position in a communiqué issued on Thursday in Kafanchan. The document, signed by the chapter chairman, Dr. Christopher Yerima, stated that the decision to appreciate the governor was reached unanimously during the union’s Congress held on 18 November.
Dr. Yerima noted that the Congress also welcomed the governor’s approval of the 65-year retirement age, the release of accreditation funds, and the renovation of hostels and science laboratories. He said these measures signalled meaningful progress in tackling staff welfare and improving working conditions across the state’s colleges of education.
The communiqué further acknowledged the contribution of several stakeholders to the progress recorded. Those recognised included Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Senator Sunday Katung (APC–Kaduna South); and Rep. Dan Amos, who represents the Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency.
Others mentioned were Prof. Abubakar Sambo, Commissioner for Education, and Mr. Ismaila Lawal, Chairman of the Kaduna State House of Assembly Committee on Education.
Dr. Yerima added that the Congress had mandated the union’s leadership to write a formal letter of commendation to the governor and other stakeholders identified in the communiqué.
