The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has introduced a nationwide health insurance scheme for service attendants across its retail petrol stations, in a move aimed at improving staff welfare and enhancing workplace productivity. The initiative, announced this month, will enrol more than 7,000 attendants onto the NNPC HMO platform, ensuring access to quality healthcare regardless of their location.
The scheme was formally launched at the NNPC Mega Station in Abuja by NNPC Retail Ltd., in partnership with NNPC HMO. Speaking at the event, Mr. Baba-Shettima Kukawa, Executive Director of Retail Operations and Mobility, who represented the Managing Director of NNPC Retail Ltd., described the initiative as a significant step in the company’s commitment to employee welfare and service excellence.
“Our station attendants are the primary point of contact with customers, and their wellbeing directly affects the quality of service we provide,” Mr. Kukawa said. “The ‘Attendant Framework’ has been developed to enhance overall welfare. With the rollout of HMO coverage, we aim to ensure that every customer interaction reflects professionalism and care, while also motivating our staff.”
He noted that the scheme is not only a welfare measure but also a strategy to boost productivity, improve operational efficiency, and support sustainable business growth. “We are going beyond the pump to reinforce our commitment to our employees and customers,” he added.
Also speaking, Mr. Ademola Adebusuyi, Deputy Director of Information Technology, who represented the Managing Director of NNPC HMO, said the company is partnering with reputable healthcare providers to ensure attendants receive quality medical care nationwide. “Good health is the foundation of productivity. This scheme ensures attendants are supported by the full weight of the organisation whenever illness strikes,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Dorcas Luke Onyeche, a Customer Service Attendant at the Abuja Mega Station, welcomed the initiative. “This health insurance gives us confidence to serve customers better and motivates us to contribute more meaningfully to the company’s success,” she said.
