The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, has warned that the state government will not hesitate to sanction health workers who fail to discharge their duties responsibly.
Prof. Ugwu issued the warning on Monday during an inspection visit to the Agbani General Hospital in Nkanu West Local Government Area, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Health and representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Expressing disappointment over the level of negligence and indiscipline observed among some staff, the commissioner described such behaviour as contrary to the vision of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Prof. Ugwu stressed that health workers have a moral and professional duty to save lives and must uphold the highest standards of discipline and service.
“The era of impunity and indifference to duty is over,” he declared.
He warned that disciplinary action would be taken against any staff member found violating public service rules or neglecting assigned responsibilities.
The commissioner added that while the government is making significant investments in upgrading health facilities and improving workers’ welfare, these efforts would only yield results if health workers demonstrate commitment, honesty, and dedication to duty.
